The Windows 11 operating system includes a tool that automatically backs up the Documents, Pictures, and Desktop user folders to the OneDrive cloud storage. Although this feature protects users against data loss, it runs in the background and turning it off requires several steps.

Risks of automatic OneDrive backup

Microsoft uses automated processes to scan OneDrive storage to prevent the spread of illegal content in documents and images. These checks are not foolproof, which has led to mistaken account blocks in the past. At the same time, this means Microsoft gains access to the content of users' potentially confidential documents.

Steps to turn off backup

To disable automatic saving, follow these steps:

  • Click on the OneDrive icon (cloud shape) in the bottom right corner of the taskbar.
  • In the top right corner, select the gear icon and choose Settings from the menu.
  • In the Sync and backup window, click the Manage backup button.

In this menu, you will see the switches for the Documents, Pictures, and Desktop folders set to on. Switch the option to off for each folder one by one. After confirmation, a dialog box will appear. It is important not to select the default option Only in OneDrive, as this would delete the folder from the computer and move the data solely to the cloud.

Select the option Only on my computer and confirm with the Continue button. This ensures that Windows transfers the files from OneDrive back to your local drive. Repeat this process for all three folders.

Local alternative to the cloud

Cloud services are convenient for automation and data security, but users do not have full certainty regarding who has access to them. To maintain complete control over your data, it is recommended to use local backups to an external USB hard drive or a NAS device.
