Tesla AI5, the latest chip for artificial intelligence, has achieved tape-out at Samsung Foundry. According to Samsung's chief engineer James Kim, it will be manufactured at the factory in Taylor, Texas using a 2nm process. Production should begin soon.

Tape-out at Samsung Foundry

Tape-out means the chip design is complete and ready for production. Tesla AI5 previously underwent tape-out at TSMC, but now Samsung is also joining. Elon Musk showed the first sample in April and confirmed that the chip will be manufactured at both foundries.

Specifications and performance

The AI5 module contains an accelerator chip half the size of a reticle and 12 SK hynix memory modules (GDDR6/GDDR7). The memory bus is 384-bit, allowing throughput of up to 1.536 TB/s. Tesla has not revealed exact performance, but Musk claims up to 40 times improvement over the previous generation.

Future of AI5

AI5 will be one of the most produced chips. It will be used in Tesla cars, Optimus robots, and data centers. Production at two foundries will ensure sufficient capacity. Stay tuned for more news.
